Honda ATV Model Codes and What Do They Mean?
Honda ATV Model Numbers
Model Codes
TRX420FA, TRX500FM, TRX250TM, TRX420TE, what are these “Model Codes” and what do they mean? Each portion of the model code is important in identifying the Model Family and the Sub-model options.
Model Names
To make things even more confusing, there are “Model Names”. Rubicon, Recon, Foreman, and Rancher are all Model Names. Let’s break them down and learn where they can be found!
TRX
The first part of the model, “TRX”, is Honda’s model code for all Honda ATVs. Utility and Sport quads both share the “TRX” model name. No matter what Honda ATV crosses your path, “TRX” is the model code.
Engine Size
The second part of the model code is the CC or engine size of the machine. For example, a TRX420 would simply be a 420cc machine, a TRX500 would be a 500cc machine, and so on.
Drivetrain/Transmission
The third part of the model code is where it gets tricky. There are a few possible combinations of letters this could be. The letter combinations are based off of the Drivetrain and Transmission of the unit. Below are the possible letter combinations of the models.
TM = (T)wo Wheel Drive (M)anual Shift
TE = (T)wo Wheel Drive (E)lectric Shift
FM = (F)our Wheel Drive (M)anual Shift
FE = (F)our Wheel Drive (E)lectric Shift
FA = (F)our Wheel Drive (A)utomatic Shift
Identifying the model of the machine is critical when it comes to ordering parts and making repairs. Different units use different parts depending on the transmission and drivetrain.
Though a TRX420FE and TRX420FA are both “Ranchers”, they have different transmissions, which in turn changes the oil filter used. This small change could cause a nightmare when doing an oil change. If a kit for the manual shift unit was ordered instead of an automatic shift unit, the oil filter would be incorrect.
Where to find model information
There are a few different places where the model code can be found on these machines.
1) A sticker on the left-hand side of the frame. Normally under the front left wheel well, or by the left footpeg
2) The title of the machine
3) The owner’s manual
A vin number can be used to determine year and model as well. The Vin on a Honda ATV can be found on the crossmember bar directly behind the front bumper or winch. It is a bit difficult to see as it is on the top of the crossmember. It is usually easiest to use a smartphone to take a picture of the vin. This vin can be called in to your local Honda Dealer and they can provide year and model information.
